Shanke's eyes widened as he watched Nick absorb the bullets from the perps gun and the toss the perp against a wall, knocking him out. Shanke's mouth dropped open as Nick turned toward him and he saw the glowing yellow eyes and pointed teeth. "This is not happening," he muttered to himself. Then he said out loud, "I told you not to go strange on me!" Nick's eyes and teeth returned to normal. He walked over to Shanke and said, (Beat Beat Beat) "You did not see anything unusual." (Beat Beat Beat) Shanke obediently repeated, "These are not the... oops, I did not see anything unusual." Nick noticed that for some stange reason Shanke's fingers were crossed, but he did not see any significance in the jesture. Satisfied, he said, "Handcuff the perp. I'm late for an appointment with my Doc." Shanke shook his head. "I knew there was something strange about that guy. I'd better not tell Myra or she'll have me on Oprah." Nat was waiting in the kitchen of the loft when Nick arrived. She picked up a cup full of liquid as he walked up to her. "Sorry I'm late," Nick apologized, "but we had to track down the suspect in the Smith case." Nat was bursting with ill concealed excitement. "Nick, I'm not positive but I think I've found a cure. It may be dangerous to try," She offered Nick the cup, "but in my samples it destroyed the vampire element in the tissue. Destroyed it, not neutralized or mutated." Nick took the cup from Nat's hand and stared down into its contents. He remembered all the times before when he thought he was on the verge of a cure. He remembered the pain when each possible solution was another failure. Nick took a deep breath and gathered his courage. Then he swallowed the vile tasting liquid. A burning sensation spread through his body. Nick felt the vampire inside begin to die. Deep inside his mind he heard LaCroix scream, NO! But it was too late. Nick felt peace descend. Then he saw the light. He was drawn toward it. Somewhere far, far away he heard a woman scream, he paused briefly, but resumed his journey. Only the light mattered now. Nat stood leaning against the counter staring at the pile of gray dust through her tears, unable to comprehend what had happened. LaCroix sood in Nick's loft staring down at the pile of gray dust on the kitchen floor. Tears of blood trickled down his cheeks. "Nicholas, my child, why, WHY would you not LISTEN to me. I TOLD you there was no cure. Yes, as you have discovered, that was a lie. there are many CURES. The Sunlight, the stake, the fire. All will work. You Dr. Lambert's formula, it also worked. But you would not understand that you were already dead, that when you destroyed the vampire, you destroyed the force that held you in this mortal world. Oh, Nicholas, I will miss you. I hope you have found your peace, my son, because you have swallowed a most permanent solution." =========================================================================
