She had come over to watch movies. And, as usual, had fallen asleep next to him. He had learned over time how to gently move her as she slept, until she came to rest against his chest. How he coveted these times, these stolen touches. He savored the closeness, her warmth against his cool skin. The smell of her hair, her skin. Too soon, the darker feelings came to the fore. The steady drumming of her heart called to the beast. With its emergence came the need to possess, to take in all through her blood. With care, he stood. He lowered her head to the cushion, and raised her feet so she lay along the length of the couch. Then he backed away. The beast still screamed for conquest. But the man walked away, up to his bed, alone. And he cried. She awoke in the morning, refreshed. Unaware of the battle that was fought. A battle for her soul. A battle he again won.
