Subject: Challenge: To Serve and Protect (Katrina volunteering) Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 17:24:06 -0700 From: Kristen Fife To: FKFIC-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU Based on the suggestion of a fiction about the FK characters volunteering during Katrina (on the discussion list), and tied loosely in concept to my previous message "Instant Message". To Serve and Protect Natalie watched the television in horror as she saw what devastation hurricane Katrina was causing. The film was brutally honest in showing New Orleans. She turned off the television and sat down at her computer to access the American Red Cross site to donate money to help the poor refugees from the disaster. As her desktop emerged, she saw her Instant Messenger flashing. She opened it up, smiling to herself. 1228knight says: Hi Nat, how are you doing? I was just watching the news about Katrina. Nat414 says: I'm fine; I was just logging on to the Red Cross site to donate. 1228knight says: Would you by chance be interested in helping more directly? Nat414 says: I'd love to, but what can I do? 1228knight says: The de Brabant Foundation is sending several teams to Louisiana to help, including a medical team. There was also a request for a medical examiner. Interested? Nat414 says: Where do I sign on? 1228knight says: I'll have someone from the foundation call you in the morning. Nat414 says: Thanks for thinking of me Nick. 1228knight says: Who else? Please take care of yourself while you're there. It isn't pretty. Nat414 says: You know I will. I guess I should get packing and tell my family. 1228knight says: I believe the Toronto team is leaving on Sunday. Nat414 says: Great. I'll email you a status report; I know you'll get things from the Foundation, but I guess you'd be happier getting something more 'up close and personal'. 1228knight says: You know me too well. I have to go, I have a lot to do. Good night, Nat. Nat414 says: You too Nick. I'll be thinking of you. Natalie shut the window down, unaware that at the other end of the wire, the Executive Director of the deBrabant Foundation was planning on taking a personal role in the relief efforts.
