Subject: Angels Would Fall (1/1) Date: Thu, 25 Sep 2003 13:33:35 -0700 From: April French To: FKFIC-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU Angels Would Fall--a Forever Knight story By April French Author's Note: Just a short piece. Nick's not in love with Natalie--well, I think he is, he just won't admit it--but he's long ago come to regard her as a unique person, so now he's just enumerating all her wonderful qualities to himself. And Natalie's totally gone on our gorgeous blond detective, of course. A product of "Four Hours to Long Island." The song belongs to Melissa Etheridge, off her album 'Breakdown.' The words are my own, nothing else is. Praise, comments, etc, etc, send 'em on over. Nasty flames, keep to yourself. Will be archived at my site http://www.geocities.com/runeshard/fkficindex.html with all the others. Permission to archive is given to the FTP site. Anyone else wishing to archive must first bribe me with ice-cold bottles of Mountain Dew (I have an addiction). ~~~ Angels Would Fall (1/1) Toronto, 1992 Nick looked at the protein shake dubiously. "It's still pretty pale," he said, wrinkling his nose. "You're sure this is going to taste better than the other ones?" "I changed the formula." Natalie snapped off her rubber gloves and dropped them into the sink. "But I sure as hell am not going to drink it," she winked, her lovely blue eyes sparkling with humor. As he tentatively tasted the drink, Nick felt a flopping sensation in his stomach that had nothing to do with the blood substitute. The rope that's wrapped around me Is cutting through my skin And the doubts that have surrounded me Are finding their way in It wasn't that bad... not as bad as the first few attempts, but he certainly wasn't going to give her the satisfaction of knowing that. Nick liked seeing Natalie when her temper flared up; she had a wonderfully vibrant temper, and when she got her dander up... oh, but it was a sight to see. Most of the women Nick had been with over the centuries had had that same quality--they would not hesitate to air their opinions, vocally, when something annoyed them. He wouldn't tell her that, though. At the risk of making her mad at him. I feel it close to me Like a holy man praising My desperate hour It's better, better that way "How is it?" Nick gave her a grimace and made to dump the rest of the shake down the drain. "Don't you dare," she warned, poking his arm. "Take it home with you. it. And cold-- "I know, I know." Nick capped the tall plastic cup. "Cold turkey on the hemoglobin. You sure they don't make a patch for this?" he grinned. "I'll check the drugstore on my way home," Natalie quipped. Her hair flipped when she turned swiftly. "Tomorrow's your night off?" "Yeah, but I may stop by anyway, and tell you just how my indigestion's progressing." So I'll come by and see you again I'll be such a very good friend Have mercy on my soul I will never let you know Where my mind has been The harsh light of the morgue might have overshadowed a lesser personality than Natalie Lambert's. But even being constantly surrounded by death could not dampen her spirits. Angels never came down There's no one here They wanna hang around But if they knew If they knew you at all Then one by one the angels Angels would fall "And after you're finished griping away my evening, d'you want to have a movie night?" I've crept into your temple I have slept upon your pew I have dreamed of the divinity Inside and out of you "Sure," Nick grinned. "King Kong, Godzilla, or some cheap American Godzilla knock-off?" Natalie shook her curly head. "You're gonna think I'm nuts." "Aw, Nat, don't be silly. I think that at least twice a night." She threw a hand towel at his smirking face. "I was thinking more along the lines of a classic." "Like..." Nick prompted. "'Wuthering Heights?'" Nick blinked. It was an odd choice of movie, dark and depressing and very sad, a story of unrequited love between a woman and her socially unsuitable lover. But it was a good movie, and he liked it. "Okay." Natalie smiled. I want it more than truth I can taste it on my breath I would give my life Just for a little, a little death "So it's an odd choice," she shrugged. "I'm in an odd mood." "And keeping company with an odd friend." That made Natalie want to throw something else at him, but she had run out of towels. Besides, his face was so open and handsome and his smiled was so merry that she lost her nerve. So I'll come by and see you again I'll be just a very good friend I would not look upon your face I will not touch upon your grace Your ecclesiastic skin "You're not odd, Nick," she scolded. "You're just--" "A vampire?" "Unique," Natalie corrected, rolling her eyes. Angels never came down There's no one here They wanna hang around But if they knew If they knew you at all Then one by one the angels Angels would fall Nick laughed. She did that to him, made him laugh. She did that often. She was good at it. "Yeah, well, so're you." Angels Angels would fall Sweet angels... Natalie batted her eyelashes coquettishly. "Why, thank you, Detective." Then she winked. "It's about time you realized it." The vampire's cobalt-blue eyes regarded her steadily. "I've known that for years." There was a moment of startled silence, and then Nick sighed. "I've gotta get going." I'll come by and see you again I'll have to be a very good friend If I whisper they will know I'll just turn around and go You will never know my sin He leaned over the table and gave Natalie a quick kiss on the temple. "Drink your shake," she reminded him. "Yes, ma'am," Nick smiled. "Night, Nat." There's no one here They wanna hang around But if they knew If they knew you at all Then one by one the angels Angels would fall Angels would fall... ~Finis--September 25th, 2003~ April French daomir_darkfell@yahoo.com ===== ~Knightwalker: Forever Knight Fan Fiction -- http://www.geocities.com/runeshard/fkficindex.html ~The Corvina: Original Fiction, Poetry and Fan Fiction -- http://www.geocities.com/runeshard/index.html "The Devil and I had a chat this morning..." -- Charles Baudelaire __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
