This story takes place during 'Night in Question,' just the infamous bedroom scene. It warn't no dream, folks. The song is "Sleep," by Melissa Etheridge, off her album Breakdown. The story is for KC Smith's birthday. Happy Birthday, KC! You get to archive and no one else does! ~~~ Sleep (1/1) Drowsily, Nick inhaled the wonderful, indeterminate scent of Natalie's hair. She had told him that they were not in a relationship... he wondered now why she had said that. After your laughter like thunder After your skin like coffee and cream Maybe she had been afraid that he wouldn't believe her. Nick smiled. He still didn't remember her face, but her touch was familiar. Her voice touched a nerve somewhere. Her eyes and her smile stirred something deep inside him. If he recognized nothing else about his life, he recognized Natalie. After it takes our bodies into the night After we've come to the extreme He snuggled down in her embrace, just inside the crook of her arm. He pillowed his head on her breast and listened to the steady, reassuring rhythms of her heart and lungs. I want to lay down on your shoulder Just inside your arm I want to listen to your heart beat And your breathing on and on I want to lay down on your shoulder Surrender to your peace And go to sleep Her skin was soft against his... her kisses were sweet. Nick never wanted to leave the safe circle of her arms. In the deep places of his mind, Nick felt... relieved. Replete, in a way he could not understand. Natalie had called them good friends, but not lovers. Maybe that was why he felt so good. Maybe... maybe this was the first time they had ever made love. And when we've gone a million miles Made true our dreams with sweat and bone That thought made Nick a little sad. Poor Natalie, to be so in love with a man who could not remember her. That if this past night had been their first time together, it would never have the same meaning for him that it did for her. Nick turned his head and kissed the silken smooth skin between Natalie's breasts. It had been a special night for him, though. It had... meaning. He felt peaceful in her arms. Safe. He knew he could trust her with all his... secrets... After we've built it up with our bare hands Made strong a place we can call home I want to lay down on your shoulder Just inside your arm I want to listen to your heartbeat And your breathing on and on I want to lay down on your shoulder Surrender to your peace And go to sleep He didn't remember her. But by God, he would try. And even if he never did... it wouldn't matter. Regardless, he knew her. She would keep him safe... and loved... And when the light in my eye is fading When running water becomes too deep Finally angels turn my fire to dust And when my soul's no longer mine to keep Nick wrapped his arms around Natalie's waist and pulled her closer. He needed to feel her warmth on his skin. He felt her stroking his hair. He felt her kiss. "I love you, Nick," she whispered. I want to lay down on your shoulder Just inside your arm I want to listen to your heartbeat And your breathing on and on I want to lay down on your shoulder Surrender to your peace And just go to sleep Snuggling even closer against her, Nick sighed contentedly, and closed his eyes. ~Finis--September 28th, 2003~ April French daomir_darkfell@yahoo.com ===== ~Knightwalker: Forever Knight Fan Fiction -- http://www.geocities.com/runeshard/fkficindex.html ~The Corvina: Original Fiction, Poetry and Fan Fiction -- http://www.geocities.com/runeshard/index.html "The Devil and I had a chat this morning..." -- Charles Baudelaire __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
