Subject: Where's the Girl (1/1) Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2004 11:24:07 -0800 From: April French To: FKFIC-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU Where's the Girl?--a Forever Knight story By April French Author's Note: An IB story, as thanks to Kristin over at Knight Vision for the spec-TAC-ular banners she made for my Sons of Lilith series (going on my new site!). I've already sent her one story, but this one insisted on being written, so I wrote it. It takes place after the flashbacks in 'Partners of the Month.' The song is from "The Scarlet Pimpernel: The Musical" by Frank Wildhorn and Nan Knighton, with one small alteration on my part. Please do not archive. ~~~ Where's the Girl? (1/1) Venice, 16th century Nicholas could not sleep. And well he knew the reason why. If there was one thing in this world that he , it was an empty bed, and a long, cold, lonely day. I remember days full of restlessness and fury I remember nights that were drunk on dreams There was a jug of bloodwine in the corner of the chamber. Rising from his bed, Nicholas retrieved it, swallowing so hungrily that the rich red stuff trickled out the sides of his mouth, dripping down his chin and onto his bare chest. I remember someone who hungered for the glory Lowering the depleted vessel, Nicholas grimaced. The wine had no taste. I remember her, but it seems... she's gone... The house was quiet. Nicholas could hear the soft breathing and easy heartbeats of the domestic servants in their quarters. They had been 'persuaded' to be, like their employers, nocturnal people. What they thought of the arrangement Nicholas neither knew nor cared, so long as they went about their business and kept their mouths shut. It was still early. The sun had barely begun its climb into the heavens. Nicholas had no choice but to return to his curtained bed, chill and solitary. He wrapped his arms around a pillow and tried in vain to catch a hint of her scent. Where's the girl? Where's the girl with the blaze in her eyes? Where's the girl with that gaze of surprise? Now and then I still dream she's beside me... Many's the time had Nicholas thought of life before her, but never--not once--had he considered life without her, and he cursed himself for seven different kinds of fool. Where's the girl Who could turn on the edge of a knife? Where's the girl who was burning for life? I can still feel her breathing beside me What had he done to cause her to leave? Did he not captivate her anymore? The thought gave Nicholas pause. She was a lively and passionate woman. Had be become too tame for her? And I know She remembers how fearless it feels To take off with the wind at your heels She and I took this world like a storm Abruptly, Nicholas let the pillow go. Come again Let the girl in your heart tumble free Bring your renegade heart home to me Always, she had told him that she loved him. And love did not just stop because one's tastes changed, that, Nicholas refused to believe. He was not so much younger than her, after all, and he had not stopped loving her. In the dark of the morning I'll warm you, I'll rouse you... It was only noon, Nicholas groaned to himself, long legs writhing as he tossed in his tangling bedclothes. His fangs ached, his body was raging, his heart throbbed--he her, in so many ways. And there was not a single doubt in his mind that wherever she was, felt as he did. My Janette, Don't forget I know who you are We were cut from the same surly star Like two jewels in the sky, sharing fire She needed breathing space, some time along, Nicholas assured himself. That was all. She would come back to him. She would come back. Where's the girl So alive and still aching for more We had dreams that were worth dying for We were caught in the eye of the storm She would come--she had to come back, because she needed him as much as he needed her. She loved him just as much... Come again Let the girl in your heart tumble free Bring your renegade heart home to me In the dark of the morning I'll warm you, I'll rouse you... She had to. That thought allowed Nicholas to snatch a few broken hours of sleep, a few hot and cloudy dreams. Where's the girl? Is she gazing at me with surprise? Do I still see that blaze in her eyes? Am I dreaming or is she beside me... now? Someday, she had said, their eyes would meet, and they would fall in love all over again. But Nicholas knew, in his heart, that he not stopped, and never would. ~Finis--January 13th, 2004~ April French daomir_darkfell@yahoo.com ===== ~Knightwalker: Forever Knight Fan Fiction -- http://www.geocities.com/runeshard/fkficindex.html ~The Corvina: Original Fiction, Poetry and Fan Fiction -- http://www.geocities.com/runeshard/index.html "The Devil and I had a chat this morning..." -- Charles Baudelaire __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
